I have been learning the sitar from Gadgil ji for close to over 2 years. I have always had a personal tutelage under him and coz of that I must say his passion and love for teaching is incredible. Guruji is very meticulous teacher and carries the rich music legacy from his Gurus For him, teaching the sitar is first getting the technique and finger work right. This I believe is essential especially in the early days since it inculcates the habit of economising the use of fingers while playing faster phrases spanning over the entire fret board. Guruji will ensure the student grasps all phrases with utmost ease and will make you rehearse them until it becomes a part of your system (or a habit). What impresses me is his attention to every detail that I play. Apart from being academically and professionally accomplished, Guruji’s musical training has been in the rich Maihar tradition of sitar. He is very open to new thoughts and ideas when it comes to approaching the raga system of our music. While teaching a gat, he will lay out the framework of raga and play the gat and then explain how to build your own phrases to compliment the gat. With this, I got to learn various combinations of notes, use of tihaais and it strengthened my understanding of the time cycle. Honestly, I fall short of words for describing him as my Teacher. All I can say is that it is a blessing to have him as my teacher!
I have been learning from Mr. Rajendra Gadgil for several years. He's one of the most accomplished and knowledgeable sitar teachers present today. His knowledge of ragas is immense and he teaches in a very disciplined and dedicated way. I've experienced the progress in my playing as well as in my knowledge of ragas ever since I started learning from him.
I have known Rajendra for 20 years now. In fact we used to learn under Pt. Katick Kumar. He being the senior most student and Guru Bhai, I used to go to his house for additional training. He has in depth knowledge in ragas, an excellent feel of shruti and adept in laya and taals. A very patient teacher and willing go an extra mile to ensure that I have grasped correctly. He was available any time for clearing doubts.
An Exceptional Guru! iI got to know Shri Narendra Gadgil almost 5 yrsrs ago. he walked into my Sitar class with his Sitar & introduced himself. i requested him to play a small piece for me. His performance shook me out of slumber. Such precision, such command, such clarity in each stroke revealed his genius. immediately I welcomed him to join us as a Guru. all the students were also awestruck. he took over his role with total ease. made each student play with as much dexterity as possible. All of us started looking forward to his weekly sessions. The students were being groomed by him with his extreme sincerity & affection. it has been a growing love for the instrument & his style. the students started playing For Him. I believe, that's the Best quality of a Guru. In the year 2018, he was felicitated as the Best Unsung Guru at 18th VASANTOTSAV of Ajivasan. We. all wish him well & all the Best in all his pursuits
I have known Gadgilji as my Sitar guru for the last 7-8 years. As a teacher, he has deep knowledge about the nuances of Sitar-vadan, and exhorts his students towards perfection. Gadgilji’s emphasis on the grammar and purity of the Raag has benefited me personally. His deep knowledge of Indian philosophy and spirituality lends an additional dimension to his playing and teaching. His methods of teaching blend the understanding of the Raag with the technique of playing in a structured manner. He is patient and empathetic to the schedule-conflicts faced by his students. Gadgilji is generous in imparting knowledge and it has been (and continues to be) a privilege to be his student. Dr. Radha Kumar Mumbai
Rajendra Gadgil is my brother in law. He is a dedicated sitar teacher who takes great pains with his students. He has taken taalim from great gurus of Maihar gharana and he makes every effort to carry forward this lineage to his students. There are no shortcuts in his teaching. Soor, laya, rag, expression and all other aspects are imparted to his students.
